November 27, 2010 - As with anything new there is work to get the word out and get things ramped up in a short period of time and throw in hunting season and all the other activities all of us as outdoors men and women and time gets short. We do have winners for the 1st Annual Southern Deer Stands Deer Blind Contest that have been selected by our celebrity judging panel. The winners are Bobby Minchew 1st place, Andy Watts 2nd place, Mitch Krivokucha 3rd place. We learned a few things this year as well, we found that many potential entrants did not get their blinds built in time. We thank everyone who participated this year, congratulate our winners and look forward to the 2011 contest, so build your blinds early!

Bobby Minchew – Humble, Texas

Winner – Grand Prize Package for 2010 Best Texas Deer Blind

I have 4 sons that bowhunt and needed a box bow blind that would fit 2 or 3 people. Funds were short so I obtained a shipping crate from a guy that worked at the airport in Houston. The crate was plywood and it was held together by “L”-shaped clips. The initial measurements were 7′ tall by 7′ wide by 5.5′ deep. The boys and I got out the skill saw and made bow windows and a door. With a few purchases of hinges, paint, and lumber to strengthen the base and build a 6′ platform, we were off to the deer lease between Ft. McKavett and Eldorado in Schleicher County. It was 108 degrees the day we set up the stand and built a huge feeder pen nearby it. My oldest son had a broken leg and stayed home. So me, Jonathon, Josh, and Jeffrey got busy. It turned out nice. We had to add shoot through mesh on the main windows after we got busted a few times. But we ended up taking several deer from the blind over the next two seasons. It is still serving it’s purpose and will be used for the third year in a row. Not bad for a shipping crate! I”ve attached several pics. Thanks for considering us for your deer blind contest!

Andy Watts – Richardson, Texas

Winner – Second Place Prize Package for 2010 Best Story behind a Texas Deer Blind

The deer blind shown here in the attached pictures is a design I have had in mind for a few years but just recently got on a new lease and decided to build it. I wanted a blind that was insulated, weather sealed, and could be easily taken apart and re-assembled if I were to want to move it somewhere else. The design I developed enabled me to completely build all of the walls, floor, and ceiling, install the windows, paint everything, and even insulate and carpet the walls and floor as separate pieces so that they could all lay flat on a flatbed trailer and be easily transported to the lease. There were access holes inside so that I could reach the bolts to connect the walls to the floor and there were steel angles on the corners to bolt the walls together. All we had to do to set up the blind was pick up the six panels one by one and bolt them together and then silicone all of the joints for extra weather protection. Like a big erector set.
